Where is my money going?
Many ask this valid question considering that Wake County Alcoholic Beverage Control is a government entity. Wake County ABC operations are funded by sales only. If someone does not purchase a bottle of alcohol, their tax dollars do NOT go to fund any of our operations.
Unlike a public, private, or family owned company, the revenue we generate does not go to support shareholders or investors. Instead, it goes back to you…the community. We distribute it on a periodic bases to the State of North Carolina, Wake County Government, the Towns & Cities in Wake County, law enforcement efforts, as well as non-profit organizations who provide treatment for and education in alcohol and substance abuse. Wake County ABC cares about our community and gives back!!! It is one of the many benefits of a controlled system.
The purpose of this page is to provide information on that revenue distribution between July 1 through June 30 of each year. Click on the links below to learn “Where is my money going?”
What money was given back to the local governments?
The original municipalities with corporate limits in Wake County are Apex, Cary, Fuquay-Varina, Garner, Holly Springs, Knightdale, Morrisville, Raleigh, Rolesville, Wake Forest, Wendell, and Zebulon. As time has passed, the municipalities Angier, Clayton, and Durham have grown and annexed property within Wake County. The revenue we distribute is not from the specific stores in each municipality. It is combined together and distributed using the Wake County Tax Assessor Office’s Tax Valuation which takes into consideration the value of real and personal property. Click here for a detail on how much was given to each government entity last fiscal year.
What money was given to local non-profit organizations?
North Carolina General Statute 18B.805(H) directs ABC Boards to distribute money to non-profit organizations who provide research, treatment, and/or education in alcohol or substance use. “Wake ABC Cares” is a grant program that meets that demand and funds $6 million each year to qualifying vetted organizations. 60% of the funds went towards education and treatment. 40% of the funds went solely to educations efforts. Organizations funded include Wake County’s WakeBrooke Center, Healing Transitions, Raleigh Rescue Mission, Southlight Healthcare, the Women’s Center of Wake County, the Wake County Boys & Girls Club, Fellowship Home of Raleigh, Urban Ministries, the Emmaus House, Triangle Family Services, Wake Monarch Academy, Interact, the Alice Aycock Poe Health Center, Neighborhood Health Center, Mother’s Against Drunk Driving, as well as camps held at the Town of Zebulon, Rolesville, and Wendell. All do great work to make our community the best place to live, work, and play.
What makes up the cost of a bottle?
Many people think that Wake County ABC sets the price of a bottle. That is not true. The price of a bottle is set by the State of North Carolina ABC Commission in conjunction with the Owner, Distiller, or Brand Representative. One of the wonderful caveats of the North Carolina controlled system is that the price of a bottle is kept low and what you see in Wake County will be the same in Wilkesboro which is the same in Wilmington. So how is the price of a bottle basically distributed? See the graphic below or click here for a PDF of the same graphic.
